Rattles and Music Workshop
In this workshop, participants will be introduced to some examples of Indigenous music and create a rattle instrument using traditional and contemporary materials. Participants will receive information about songs, music and the creative process. The first part of this workshop will focus on making the rattle, the second part will be using the rattles to learn a song together.
This workshop is approximately 2.5 hours long. All day includes 2 workshops.
Medicine Pouch Workshop
In this versatile workshop, participants will create Medicine Pouch necklaces made of deer, cow, or buffalo hide. This workshop is suitable for ages 6+ and is easily altered to skill level. (younger participants may have materials prepared for them and will assemble the pouches whereas older students may trace, cut and punch the holes in the leather themselves)
This workshop is approximately 40- 80 minutes depending on number of participants and age of participants. All day includes 4 -6 workshops.
Moccasin Making Workshop
This workshop is ideal for ages 14 + and for groups of approximately 10 – 15 people. Participants will learn to assemble their very own moccasins.
This workshop is 5 hours in length.
Loom Beading Workshop
Math and The Arts team up in this Loom Beading workshop! Participants will explore patterns, number sense and numeration, measurement and geometry as they create a design for their beaded loom bracelet. The first part of this workshop will involve participants using graph paper to create a design. The second part of this workshop is using the loom to create the beaded design which will be finished off into a super cool bracelet!
This workshop will be approximately 2-3 hours in length. All day includes 2 workshops.
Winter Mitten Making Workshop
Participants will assemble their own Leather and Fur Winter Mittens! 10 – 15 people max. Workshops approximately 4-5 hours long.
Dream Catcher Making Workshop
Hear a story about the Dream Catcher and where it came from, then learn to make a Dream Catcher you can take home!
Workshop approx 1 – 2.5 hours depending on age and skill of participants and size of Dream Catcher.
Hoop Dance Workshop
In this workshop, participants will learn about Hoop Dance and be able to see Nikki perform a Hoop Dance. The tone of the workshop focuses on giving thanks and celebrating the gifts in life. Wear comfortable clothes because there will be dancing!
This workshop is approximately 45 – 60 min in length. All day includes up to 6 workshops.
Pow Wow Dance Workshop
This workshop begins with a 30 minute power point presentation that explains with a Pow Wow is, the various protocols of a Pow Wow, as well as explanations of the dances you would see at a Pow Wow. Students will also learn proper Pow Wow etiquette and breaking down stereotypes. In the second 40 minutes of this workshop, students will have a chance to see Nikki perform the Fancy Shawl Dance and will also be trying out all of the different Pow Wow Dance Styles! The workshop will also include a round dance and the ever popular Potato Dance! Participants are sure to get up and moving and having fun!
